Last week, I attended the “Meet the Distillers” event at Ben & Jack’s Steakhouse in NYC. The event highlighted thirty local Distillers featured in Discovering the New York Craft Spirits Boom. Author, Heather Dolland took us through the Distiller’s journey to success, and their emphasis on using locally grown products. I got a chance to meet and talk with all of the vendors and taste some of their delicious creations. I spoke to the Dolland briefly, who was signing copies of her books for all of the attendees.
Here is what she had to say about her insightful book:
Why did you decide to write this book?
Back in Sept 2014, I did an event in Astoria and met a number of craft distillers that are present here today. As a person in the alcohol business, I had no idea that all of these distillers existed. I thought I should take the time to understand how this business could occur and essentially a new industry to develop. As a new business owner myself, I wanted to write the book to bring exposure to their brands as well as All the Tastes of New York.
What is your favorite cocktail?
Believe it or not, anything that is tequila based, I know, it is not locally grown. Anything with jalapeño, very spicy tequila drink would be my favorite.
What do you recommend for the NYC gal who is trying to stay fit but still loves a great cocktail?
I would say wear good flip flops and walk everywhere you go. Do not compromise a great cocktail. Life is too short to eat bad food or drink bad drinks.
Where can we find your book? How much does it retail for?
It will be at most major retailers and Amazon.com. It will retail for $29.95.
How did you team up with Ben and Jacks for this event?
They supported my last event back in May that took place right next door for All the Tastes of New York and I thought they had a great venue to host this event.
I thought the event was a huge success. I even contacted a few distillers since I loved some of the cocktails I tried. Dolland definitely brought additional exposure to these brand and hopefully they will all gain a huge following! I personally recommend checking out “Old Whalers Style” Sag Harbor Rum.
It was mixed with ginger beer and I was in cocktail heaven!
I wish I could have tried more vendors but I’m a lightweight! LOL ! Xo-Sas
